I Was Already Baptized. Do I Get Baptized Again?
Usually, no.
The Catholic Church recognizes a valid Christian Baptism and does not repeat Baptism.
Generally, Christian Baptism involves the use of water together with Baptism in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Because circumstances vary, the parish will ask where and how you were baptized and may request documentation.
Catechumen
Someone preparing for Baptism who has not previously been baptized.
Candidate
A baptized Christian preparing for reception into full communion with the Catholic Church.
These terms are not interchangeable.
What Happens If I Become Catholic?
An already baptized Christian ordinarily:
- •Receives appropriate Catholic formation
- •Prepares spiritually
- •Celebrates the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the appropriate time
- •Makes a profession of Catholic faith
- •Is received into full communion
- •Receives Confirmation when appropriate
- •Receives the Holy Eucharist
Pastoral circumstances differ, so speak with your parish about your specific situation.
What If I Don't Know Whether My Baptism Was Valid?
Tell the parish exactly what you know. Do not assume. The parish can investigate the circumstances.
What If I Don't Have My Baptism Certificate?
Contact the church where the Baptism took place. If records cannot be located, explain the circumstances to the Catholic parish. They will advise you about what documentation or testimony may be necessary.
