The Seven Sacraments
The seven sacred moments Christ gave His Church — visible signs of invisible grace.
A sacrament is a visible sign of an invisible grace — a moment when God acts through physical things (water, oil, bread, words, hands) to give us His very life. Christ gave His Church seven sacraments, and they touch every stage of the Christian journey.
They are grouped into three families: initiation, healing, and service.
Sacraments of Initiation
Baptism
The gateway to all the other sacraments. Water is poured (or the person is immersed) while the priest says: 'I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.' Original sin is washed away, and you become a child of God and a member of His Church.
Cleanses original sin, makes you a child of God
Confirmation
The gift of the Holy Spirit, completing what Baptism began. The bishop (or priest) anoints your forehead with chrism oil and lays hands on you, strengthening you to live and defend the faith.
Strengthens you with the gifts of the Holy Spirit
Holy Eucharist
The source and summit of the Christian life. At Mass, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. Receiving Communion is the closest union with Jesus possible on this earth.
Nourishes you with the real presence of Christ
Sacraments of Healing
Reconciliation (Confession)
Christ's gift of mercy. You confess your sins to a priest, receive counsel and penance, and hear the words of absolution. Your sins are forgiven — completely and certainly.
Forgives sins, restores grace
Anointing of the Sick
For those facing serious illness, surgery, or old age. The priest anoints the forehead and hands with oil and prays for healing — of body and soul. Not only for the dying, but for anyone in serious need.
Brings spiritual and sometimes physical healing
Sacraments of Service
Matrimony
A man and a woman confer the sacrament upon each other by their vows. The priest witnesses their promise. Their marriage becomes a living sign of Christ's love for His Church.
Unites husband and wife as a sign of Christ's love
Holy Orders
The ordination of bishops, priests, and deacons. Through the laying on of hands by a bishop, a man is configured to Christ the Servant and given the mission to preach, to sanctify, and to shepherd the faithful.
Configures a man to Christ for service to the Church
The Eucharist: The Source and Summit
Of all seven sacraments, the Eucharist holds a unique place. The Church calls it the source and summit of the Christian life — because in it, we receive not just grace, but Christ Himself.
