Nonno's Favorite Novenas
A novena is nine days of prayer — or sometimes longer — a patient, trusting turning to God through the intercession of His saints.
The word novena comes from the Latin word for "nine." It is a prayer prayed over nine days — a practice that goes all the way back to the apostles, who waited and prayed together for nine days between the Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
Some novenas are nine days. Some, like Nonno's favorite, are longer. All of them share the same spirit: patient, persistent, trusting prayer. A novena is not a formula for getting what you want — it is a way of placing what you need into God's hands, again and again, until you learn to trust that He is already holding it.

1. Choose your intention. What are you asking God for? Say it plainly, in your own words.
2. Pray the novena prayers each day, at the same time if you can. Consistency matters more than perfection.
3. End each day's prayer with your personal request. Speak to God as you would to a father who loves you.
4. When the novena is complete, trust. The answer may come in ways you did not expect — but it will come.
