How to Pray the Rosary
A step-by-step guide to the most beloved Catholic devotion — the prayers, the beads, and the mysteries.
What Is the Rosary?
The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer that invites you to meditate on the key moments of the life of Jesus Christ, seen through the eyes of His mother, Mary.
It is not mindless repetition. While your lips repeat familiar prayers — the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be — your mind and heart rest on a particular moment from the life of Christ, called a mystery. The beads simply keep count, freeing you to pray without thinking about what comes next.

The Beads of the Rosary
A full rosary has five decades, plus a short opening sequence.
The Crucifix — where you begin, with the Apostles' Creed.
The Opening Beads — a short chain of beads leading to the center medal, where you pray the Our Father, three Hail Marys, and a Glory Be.
The Center Medal — the joining point, often bearing an image of Mary. Here you announce the first mystery and begin the decades.
The Five Decades — the heart of the Rosary. Each decade is one large bead (Our Father) followed by ten small beads (Hail Marys), ending with a Glory Be.

Hold the crucifix and profess the ancient summary of the Christian faith.
First single bead
The Our Father
On the first large bead after the crucifix, pray the Our Father.
Next three beads
Three Hail Marys
On each of the three small beads, pray a Hail Mary — traditionally for an increase of faith, hope, and love.
Next single bead
Glory Be
On the bead before the center medal, pray the Glory Be.

Apostles' Creed
Hold the crucifix and profess the faith.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Praying the Five Decades
Each decade follows the same simple pattern.
1. Announce the Mystery
Before each decade, name the mystery you are about to contemplate — for example, "The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation."
2. Our Father
On the single large bead that begins each decade, pray the Our Father.
3. Ten Hail Marys
On each of the ten small beads that follow, pray a Hail Mary. While your lips pray, let your mind rest on the mystery.
4. Glory Be & Fatima Prayer
After the tenth Hail Mary, pray the Glory Be, then the Fatima Prayer: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen."
Repeat this pattern for all five decades — one for each mystery of the day. After the fifth decade, move on to the closing prayers.
The Four Sets of Mysteries
The Rosary is divided into four sets of five mysteries, each meditating on a part of Christ's life. The Church traditionally prays a different set each day of the week.

Closing the Rosary
Hail, Holy Queen
After the fifth decade, pray the Hail, Holy Queen (Salve Regina) — a beloved hymn asking Mary to intercede for us.
The Sign of the Cross
End the Rosary as you began it — with the Sign of the Cross, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Tips for Beginners
- ✝Start small. If five decades feels like too much, pray just one decade. The Rosary is a lifelong companion, not a race.
- ✝Use a physical rosary. Holding the beads helps your hands and heart pray together. You can buy one at any Catholic gift shop or parish.
- ✝Don't worry about distractions. When your mind wanders — and it will — gently bring it back to the mystery. That return is itself a prayer.
- ✝Pray at your own pace. There is no stopwatch. Some pray the Rosary in 15 minutes, others in 30. Both are pleasing to God.
- ✝Learn the prayers first. If you don't yet know the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be by heart, learn them one at a time before taking on the full Rosary.

Special protection
Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces.
Protection and great graces
I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
A spiritual weapon
The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell; it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
Growth in virtue
It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God.
Help toward holiness
It will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things.
Help in trials
The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish.
The sacraments at death
Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. He shall not perish by an unprovided death.
Light and grace
If he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.
Aid at death
Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
Great glory in Heaven
Those who are faithful in reciting the Rosary shall have, during their life and at their death, the light of God and the plenitude of His graces.
Graces sought through the Rosary
At the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.
Help for those who promote the Rosary
I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
The communion of saints
The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.
Children of Mary and Christ
You shall obtain all that you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.
A sign of predestination
All those who propagate the holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death.

An Important Note
These fifteen promises are part of Catholic devotional tradition, attributed to a private revelation given to Saint Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche. They are not a contract or a guarantee, and they do not carry the same weight as defined Church dogma. They are best understood as an encouragement to devotion — an invitation to trust in Mary's intercession and to grow closer to her Son through the prayer she so loved.
